SpinRite 6.0 Error: Division Overflow Error!
Yesterday a 1TB WD drive I use for media storage was missing from my list of hard drives. I rebooted and saw the BIOS hung when it got to SATA2, the SATA slot this drive is plugged into. I attempted to run SpinRite 6.0 to see if it would succeed. I received this error message: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Division Overflow Error! Spinrite 'Division Overflow Error'
Not sure if this is the proper place to introduce this but thought it would be a good place to start. Twice now I've tried to scan my 2TB WD drive and twice it Spinrite has stopped complaining the basically the following: A critical System Err occured @ B04E from which Spinrite cannot recover System has been halted eax 058AE9EE ebx 0000001A ecx 00000000 edx 000001F0 esi 00000000 edi 0000003F ebp FFF00000 esp 00003FEE ds 10E4 gs 6FE8 es 10E4 ss 3475 fs 7049 fl 0296 Is the drive hosed? Steve Gibson did not write SpinRite .. news at eleven..
Stop the presses!!! Robert Isbell aka Yuutomo on This Week In Tech forum http://thisweekintech.com/sn22#comment said the following: 'I more than think that he did not write spinrite when I have an old copy on a 5/14 floppy that does not have his name anywhere on the documentation, it lists another person entirely. I registered not out of this but because I thought this was a sane group of people that used their heads and not a bunch of mindless sheep. and for the record, my user name is Yuutomo, but my name is Robert Isbell.' Hello Steve, Just want to make sure, did you try the UDMA/UDMA2 working with SPINRITE 6? Will it improve performance or no effect at all? Or SPINRITE need to remove anything in CONFIG.SYS? Sorry if someone asked before. Thanks. Rgds, Johnson. Hi Steve, Sorry, I'm not clear enough. Mr. Jack R. Ellis created a UDMA driver (now XDMA) for enabling DMA for DOS, at the same time you're working on SPINRITE 6. I've no idea what will happen if UDMA or XDMA work with SPINRITE 6, or SPINRITE 6 will have it's own UDMA code? So want to ask you for commen...
Division Overflow Error! Critical error 5672
So I'm running spinrite on my Terabyte Western Digital. 512 byte sectors, nothing fancy. It's one part of a mdadm raid array that I took out to fix a bad sector. It runs okay for a while, but then I get this error: A critical error occured at: 5672 from which SpinRite CANNOT recover. The system has been halted. I tried jumping ahead to where the damage is by setting the start to 80%. This causes spinrite to immediately crash with this error. Is this the result of some limit on HDD sizes. 32-bit limitation? If spinrite can't help me, is there another program...

Division Overflow Error
Steve While trying the sr6_r01 preview, I had a Division Overflow error. When I started Spinrite, it warned me the drive was not well, it was a red screen but I can't remember the exact words, sorry :-(. I know the disk is on it's last legs but I thought I'd give spinrite a go to see what it could do. I tried this twice, getting the screen grab on the second attempt. Realising you might want more info, I tried it again for the third time, taking screen grabs at each stage but the error did not happen again, typical. I hope the screenshots below are of some us...

Steve: wipe-only spinrite ?
Hi Steve, sorry for jumping barefoot into *your* group but I was thinking about an idea which may be interesting Your spinrite already has all the 'tech stuff' in place to handle different HDs/controllers and in any case to work w/o problems; now... in some cases one may need to totally WIPE an HD so... what about creating a 'stripped down' version of SR which instead of performing a 'read/ wipe/rewrite' just performs multiple 'pattern writes' on a disk to totally wipe all its contents ? I know, there are tools like http://dban.sourceforge.n...

Hard drive 'error' but Spinrite reads partition without errors.
I have a couple of WD 160GB hard drives which both failed simultaneously. I'll give more detail about that below... but for now let me tell you what Spinrite does with the drive. The BIOS/POST reports a hardware failure with this drive (booting to Windows XP - and this drive does not appear anywhere - e.g. device manager or in Storage Management) Spinrite 'sees' the drive but has 'unknown' against all of the drive properties. It sees the NTFS volume on the drive It runs the level 2 'recovery' perfectly... although nothing is actually found to be fa...
Spinrite and seek errors
I am a new user to Spinrite. While testing a laptop I get seek errors. Spinrite shows about 220,000 seek errors on a 15 gig partition. Rate shows as 4339 which I believe is 4.339%. This computer frequently refuses to boot Windows XP but always boots Ubuntu Linux. Is this an excessive seek error rate and what does seek error mean? The drive shows no bad sectors, and no recovered sectors. ECC error count is 8,313,435. Wayne Hutchinson wrote: > I am a new user to Spinrite. Jimbo Scsi Drive

This is a new setup of ESXi 4.0 running VMs off of a Cybernetics miSAN D iSCSI SAN. Doing a high data read test on a VM, it took 8 minutes vs 1.5 minutes on the the same VM located on a slower VMWare Server 1.0 Host with the VMs located on local disk. I'm watching my read speeds from the SAN, and i. - Jimbo I think it was a 250GB or less drive, but they told me to create a boot cd with the regular msdos from the win98 boot disk, and this also worked for me as well. Although I was trying to get spinrite to launch automatically from this boot disk instead of having to run it manually, but was unable to achieve this.
